Biography

His father, John Plews, fought as a Sergeant with the 2nd Battalion DLI in Egypt in 1885. Isaac, who was born in 1891, enlisted as a Private in 2 DLI at Stockton in 1910 and went to France with his battalion in 1914. He fought, as a Sergeant in "D" Company, at the battle of Hooge neat Iper (Ypres) on 9-10 August 1915. He was later invalided home, but, after his recovery, he joined the 3rd Battalion DLI in reserve at South Shields, as a Company Quartermaster Sergeant. He married in January 1917 whilst serving as a QMS and was finally discharged from the Army in 1919. Isacc Plews died on 28 May 1975, aged 83 years.
